"Louise" (1985). Horton & Louise's Uptown Selector (Maloa Warriors & El Fer). Leí este poema en spoken word por primera vez en Tesaloniki, Grecia, en el templo de Araca Imaret (en turco : Alaca İmaret Camii o la mezquita Ishak Pasha - en griego : Αλατζά Ιμαρέτ ), durante la Bienal de Artistas Jóvenes del Mediterráneo en otoño de 1986 donde fui elegido para representar a España en la modalidad de poesía. Ese mismo año vino el Premio de la Crítica. Es uno de lus lugares más bellos donde he tenido la oportunidad de recitar mis poemas en spoken word. Recuerdo el lleno absoluto, el entusiasmo del público, unas 200 personas, y el compartir escenario con las poetas de Chipre, Portugal (leyó descalza) e Italia, y los poetas de Grecia, Francia y otros países. Y 25 años después encontró su música y mi voz a través de Da Boi Derinho y Maloa Warriors, con quienes he colaborado ya en más de 10 canciones. “Aquí hay Ornette, hip hop, avant-garde, sicodelia y experimentación” (Russell). Vida entre Valencia y USA. "¿Qué será de nosotros si no recordamos? "Louise" (1986). Horton & Louise's Uptown Selector (Maloa Warriors & El Fer). I read this poem the very first time -spoken word style- in the Araca Imaret Mosque in Tessaloniki (Greece) Festival of Young European Artists in which I was chosen to represent my country for poetry. The performance was one day of November in that beautiful sacred building sharing the evening with a fantastic audience of 200 people and the company of the great graphic artist Daniel Monzón, whom I met on that trip, and also sharing the stage with the poets from Portugal, Cyprus, Italy, France, etc. One year later I won the Critics Circle Award and I began to wrote my own very first songs and the songs for the Band Terminal Sur (the first one I wrote, in 1987, was "Esa Oscura Voz En Off", inspired by a character of my 1985 book "Dalmau y la Distancia" and by the poet Arthur Rimbaud).

Almost 25 years later the words met its music and my voice. Da Boi Derinho y Maloa Warriors. “Ornette, hip hop, avant-garde, psychedelic sounds and experimental” (Russell wrote). Life. Music. Valencia-USA.

Männe, by Christopher William Männe and Sir David Michael Robinson, wonderfully edited, is an impressive precious thrilling book about the healing path, the cure and redemption thru the old medicine and the mother earth. Wise words you'll find, how to walk thru the fire and get to forever now, how to be proud of scars and flames. For should we "allow for the (timeless) medicine to provide its mysterious counsel of change". A must read book, with astonishing ilustrations called “grangitas; a book, to drink from it, with love and humanity. (F. Garcin)

HAPPY FREUDS.

Conocí y escuché por primera vez a la joven banda Happy Freuds de Javea-España a través de la página de Reverbnation con canciones como la increíble "Background Noise" y las poderosas "Song-X" y "Chauncey". Luego fui a su primer concierto en la ciudad de Valencia, en Black Note, y me dejaron boquiabierto con sus fresca e intensa presencia de nuevo-viejo rock y su ecléctica gama de sonidos y estilos. Su primer disco se llama "Echoes of Sounds" y ya preparan su segundo disco. Producciones en vivo para salvar su frescura. Se cuidan mucho de no usar overdubs cuando la mayoría de las veces no es necesario, sus guitarras tienen el sonido y la clase de algunos de los grandes artistas de los 70 como Crazy Horse o bandas de hard rock –construcción y progresión, frescura y valentía– y el delicado toque de armonías, afianzado por la base rítmica de las líneas de bajo oscilantes y progresivas y la riqueza y complejidad de la batería.
He leído que mencionan a Black Sabath y Radiohead, y también tocan en vivo algunas versiones especiales de los exquisitos Gavin Clark o Tom Petty. Un viejo músico de jazz dijo una vez: "todos tocamos música folk". Música de la gente para la gente. También puedo escuchar en la música de Happy Freuds a The Felice Brothers o los sonidos de la primera banda de Patti Smith. Oh. ¡No olvidemos la voz! Consiguen la voz más apropiada para cada canción, saben cuidar el “delivery” vocal (esto no sucede a menudo hoy en día) y pueden usar la palabra hablada o la voz más rockera.



Atrapan los oídos del oyente porque todos los oyentes tienen que preguntarse dónde y cuándo llega el gancho con que atrapa una canción y su gancho es toda la canción. Cuando escucho los temas, veo que tienen una miríada de música anterior y un fondo ecléctico. Escuchando Song X o Too Blue no puedo etiquetarlos y eso es lo que más me gusta.
Crecí escuchando todo tipo de música y estilos y aprecio lo honestos y talentosos que son los intérpretes. Aprendí que la voz, las palabras o la música deben ser honestas y atrevidas. Happy Freuds puede ser folk rock lírico como Too Blue o hard rock progresivo como Song X, pero incluso pueden tocar una melodía europea tradicional y hacerla suya.

Algunos cantantes o bandas aparecen en las listas de Spotify y muchos de ellos serán olvidados con el paso del tiempo, y juro que nadie en mi vecindario sabe quiénes son. Happy Freuds exploran y en su avance está el aviso de que van a seguir haciéndolo. Se sabrá quiénes son, serán parte del futuro.
Porque las canciones son naves exploradoras, naves espaciales. Happy Freuds es una de mis bandas favoritas de este nuevo siglo. Date un respiro. Luego levántate. Entra en la pista. Baila sobre eso. Escucha. "Porque todavía amo el color azul".

HAPPY FREUDS, ENGLISH REVIEW.

What you first notice listening to Happy Freuds songs –listen to their Duncan Morriosn remixes- and their debut album “Echoes of Sounds” is that you have to leave behind some prejudices about definitions. Yes. It’s rock what they play, and they can make classic rock with sounds of today, but they also can play progressive or alternative rock and you can think of some 70’s and 90’s influences but, at the same time, they have this rare wondering touch few young bands have. It is the fresh sound, the way they record, the way they feel the music, and something else you will have to find out. They way of life is the answer. They live for playing live, in a studio, a basement, or in a concerts venue. Their first album of songs, "Echoes of Sounds" is being played around the world (2019) and they are already working on their second album.



I first knew and listened to the Javea-Spain based young band Happy Freuds thru Reverbnation page with songs like the amazing “Background Noise” and the powerful “Song-X” and “Chauncey”. I then went to their very first gig in Valencia city at Black Note and they just blew my mind with their fresh and intense rock’n’roll ways and eclectic range of sounds and styles. Live productions to save their freshness. They take much care to not use overdubs as not necesary, their guitars have the sound and class of some 70’s great performers like Crazy Horse or hard rock bands –build up and progress, coolness and bravery- and the delicate touch of armonies, tightened by the rhythmic base of rocking and progressive bass lines and the richness and complexity of drums.
I have read they talk about Black Sabath and Radiohead, and they also play live some special covers of the exquisite Gavin Clark or Tom Petty. Some old jazz musician once said: “we all play folk music”. Music from the people to the people. I can also hear in Happy Freuds music by The Felice Brothers or Patti Smith first band sounds. Oh. Dont forget the voice! They got the voice that is the right one for every song, they take care of the vocal delivery (this doesn’t happen often nowadays) and they can use the spoken word or the most rocking vocals.
They catch listener's ears because all listeners have to wonder and wait for the hook and their hook is the whole song. When listening to the tracks I see they have a myriads of previous music and eclectic background. Listening to Song X or to Too Blue I cannot label them and that's what I like the most.

I grew up hearing all kind of music and styles and I appreciate how honest and talented the players are. I learnt voice or words or music have to be honest and daring. Happy Freuds can be as lyrical folk rock as Too Blue or as progressive hard rock as Song X but they can even play a traditional european tune and make it theirs.
Oh well, some singers or bands are featured on spotify lists and most of them will be forgotten in a while, and I swear nobody in my neighborhood knows who they are. Happy Freuds explore and in their trip you can read the warning that they will continue to do it. It will be known who they are, they will be part of the future.
Songs are explorer ships, spacecrafts. Happy Freuds are one of my favorite bands from this new century. Calm down. Then get up. Get in the track. Dance on it. Listen. "For I Still Love the Color Blue"."

THE MALOA WARRIORS. Guardianes de Flobania. The great musical experimental project

MALOA WARRIORS is the most interesting experimental project I have known these last years, and I feel so proud to have been part of it adding some voice and words to some of their creations.

Derek Damico, aka ‘da boi derinho’, is the alma mater of this project and his inspirations is endless (he is also the creator of The Magneto Flobe and he aso has a solo page as "derinho"). I know few people that can have so open-minded background of music, from Captain Beefheart and Orbital to Burt Bacharach, from Ornette Coleman to The Beatles, from Brazilian music to Afro-American and European music. If you might think of a genre to define what he and his Maloa Warriors Arkestra make, you’ll have to say: “Music”.
In their own words: ‘The Maloa Warriors are the guardians of Flobania... they are very bellicose people... when they are not steadfastly protecting Flobe-kind, like when they’re on the break, they record Flobe style music... only wilder, and more experimental and stuff... sit back crack open a cool bud and pop a beer and let your mind wander...’.
Yes. Those fellows, Jack Kerouac, Dylan Thomas, Ornette, Brian and John would be proud of them. As far as I’m concerned they are a crazy bunch of naughty great musicians at their best, and Derek, the master of all this magic project, make all possible, putting together great music and rhythms and the best collaborations from amazing musicians to make the poetry dance. Yes. This is poetry dancing. This is for your all today and tomorrow parties. No doubt. Listen world, listen Florida, listen Spain. Just dance and wander...


MALOA WARRIORS es uno de los proyectos de música experimental más apasionantes que he conocido en estos últimos años y me siento muy orgulloso de haber participado en ello añadiendo alguna voz y letras a algunas de sus creaciones. Derek Damico, aka ‘da boi derinho’, es el alma mater de este proyecto (como lo es de su otro grupo The Magneto Flobe) y su inspiración es interminable. Conozco a poca gente con una mente tan abierta y un background musical semejante, desde Captain Beefheart y Orbital a Burt Bacharach, desde Ornette Coleman a The Beatles, desde la música brasileña a la afroamericana y europea. Si tratas de pensar en un género para definir lo que hace la orquesta de Maloa Warriors la respuesta sería: “Música”.
En sus propias palabras: “Los Maloa Warriors son los guardianes de Flobania… son gente muy belicosa… cuando no están incondicionalmente protegiendo el Flobismo, como cuando se dan un respiro, graban música de estilo Flobe… solo el más salvaje y experimental de los materiales…. Déjate caer, abre una birra fría y deja que tu mente viaje…’
Sí. Aquellos tipos, Jack Kerouac, Dylan Thomas, Ornette , Brian y John, estarían orgullosos de ellos. Hasta donde yo alcanzo puedo afirmar que son una banda de locos, traviesos y grandes músicos que reúnen excelente música y ritmos y las mejores colaboraciones de increíbles músicos para hacer que la poesía baile. Sí. Esto es poesía que baila. Esto es para todas tus fiestas de hoy y de mañana. No lo duden. Escucha mundo, escucha Florida, escucha España. Simplemente baila y déjate llevar…

TOM HEDRICK: THE MAN IN THE BROWN SUIT

Tom Hedrick es un músico y autor de canciones, guitarrista, multi-instrumentista y productor, nacido en Maine, criado en Buffalo (NY), donde formó parte de varias bandas, entre ellas, y durante muchos años, The Fitsners, afincado actualmente en Minneapolis. Tengo la suerte de escuchar su obra y disfrutar sus canciones desde hace dos años, después de conocerle en la red de Reverbnation y más tarde en sus propias páginas de artista.



Su música remite al power pop, el rock creativo y la new wave inglesa de los 70', aunque va siempre un poco más allá, y si The Kinks, The Jam, Nick Lowe o Big Star están entre sus influencias, su background es tan inmenso que sus discos te ofrecen una y mil sorpresas, rock progresivo, jazz, pop alternativo, y delicadas viandas repletas de afilado humor y gozo de vida. Su capacidad de disfrazarse sind ejar de ser él mismo es asombrosa, y su vena cómica y de enfant terrible es tan extraordinaria como sus amplios conocimientos de la armonía, el cambio de registro tonal, el dominio de la intensidad y el silencio.

Entre su discografía extensa y variada, cuya última novedad es el gran "Night Light" (2014), se encuentran "As If" (2002), Red Giant (2009), "2 Laws in One Day" (2011), "Paus For Cheese" (2012) y "The Man In The Brown Suit" (2013) que ahora tengo el placer de reseñar aquí.

"Coffee and Cake" es una pequeña obra maestra repleta de todos los ingredientes musicales de puro arte pop que guarda Hedrick en el tarro de sus esencias. "November" es una de las primeras canciones que escuché de este músico y su trabajo de guitarra y voz es apabullante; al igual que en la sugestiva y maravillosa "Mister B".

Sus armonías y su capacidad de hacer dinámicas sus grabaciones revelan a un artista único en su creatividad y conocimiento del medio. "Pencil" es una obra maestra que posee esa intrigante inspiración que envuelve tu atención hasta dejarte sin habla. Y "Dear Faye" es una joya musical envuelta en arreglos ingeniosos y delicados que te seduce y hace parar el tiempo.

Su séptimo disco, "The Man in The Brown Suit" es ahora uno de mis discos de cabecera gracias a la generosidad y creatividad de este músico admirable, irreverente, hedonista y entusiasta, cuya trayectoria deja asombrado a cualquier curioso que se interese por su inquieta y poderosa historia musical.
