HAPPY FREUDS. SPANISH/ENGLISH REVIEW. ROCK, CLASE Y FRESCURA.

HAPPY FREUDS.

Escucha. "Porque todavía amo el color azul".

HAPPY FREUDS, ENGLISH REVIEW.

What you first notice listening to Happy Freuds songs –listen to their Duncan Morriosn remixes- and their debut album “Echoes of Sounds” is that you have to leave behind some prejudices about definitions. Yes. It’s rock what they play, and they can make classic rock with sounds of today, but they also can play progressive or alternative rock and you can think of some 70’s and 90’s influences but, at the same time, they have this rare wondering touch few young bands have. It is the fresh sound, the way they record, the way they feel the music, and something else you will have to find out. They way of life is the answer. They live for playing live, in a studio, a basement, or in a concerts venue. Their first album of songs, "Echoes of Sounds" is being played around the world (2019) and they are already working on their second album.

I first knew and listened to the Javea-Spain based young band Happy Freuds thru Reverbnation page with songs like the amazing “Background Noise” and the powerful “Song-X” and “Chauncey”. I then went to their very first gig in Valencia city at Black Note and they just blew my mind with their fresh and intense rock’n’roll ways and eclectic range of sounds and styles. Live productions to save their freshness. They take much care to not use overdubs as not necesary, their guitars have the sound and class of some 70’s great performers like Crazy Horse or hard rock bands –build up and progress, coolness and bravery- and the delicate touch of armonies, tightened by the rhythmic base of rocking and progressive bass lines and the richness and complexity of drums.
I have read they talk about Black Sabath and Radiohead, and they also play live some special covers of the exquisite Gavin Clark or Tom Petty. Some old jazz musician once said: “we all play folk music”. Music from the people to the people. I can also hear in Happy Freuds music by The Felice Brothers or Patti Smith first band sounds. Oh. Dont forget the voice! They got the voice that is the right one for every song, they take care of the vocal delivery (this doesn’t happen often nowadays) and they can use the spoken word or the most rocking vocals.
They catch listener's ears because all listeners have to wonder and wait for the hook and their hook is the whole song. When listening to the tracks I see they have a myriads of previous music and eclectic background. Listening to Song X or to Too Blue I cannot label them and that's what I like the most.

HAPPY FREUDS WEBSITE, MUSIC. VIDEOS. NEWS

I grew up hearing all kind of music and styles and I appreciate how honest and talented the players are. I learnt voice or words or music have to be honest and daring. Happy Freuds can be as lyrical folk rock as Too Blue or as progressive hard rock as Song X but they can even play a traditional european tune and make it theirs.
Oh well, some singers or bands are featured on spotify lists and most of them will be forgotten in a while, and I swear nobody in my neighborhood knows who they are. Happy Freuds explore and in their trip you can read the warning that they will continue to do it. It will be known who they are, they will be part of the future.
Songs are explorer ships, spacecrafts. Happy Freuds are one of my favorite bands from this new century. Calm down. Then get up. Get in the track. Dance on it. Listen. "For I Still Love the Color Blue"."

TRÉBOL. "New Horizons". CD.

Ten for a Decade
(Saving Graces)

© by Russell Craig Richardson

I have now lived in the USA for ten years. here's a survey of the new musics that have coloured my days and nights, not least all those long car journeys. More than ever important. These have been the most vital to me this past decade.

2003 Hobosapiens – John Cale
After the strange and wonderful release of ‘5 Songs’, it was heartening to see Cale – now in his 60s – coming up with high energy, undeniably modern music. the first use of loops and beats which didn’t seem to be a direct lift or pastiche of bad hip-hop, with Cale’s voice sounding as on edge as ever. A reinvention that is surprisingly layered and rich. I know you can’t actually wear out CDs… but if you could, this one would have been worn out many times over.
HOBOSAPIENS

2003 Hail To The Thief – Radiohead
more than any other successful contemporary band (as seen from an old geezer’s point of view) Radiohead have impressed me. After saturating myself with OK Computer, I fell into this record, Kid A and Amnesiac all at the same time, late 2005, so the impact was overwhelming, if out of date. I can’t find anything to complain about, and I admire their generosity, even if I think the music has lost some of its consistency through In Rainbows and King of Limbs, I have imbibed hundreds of hours of their sound. Maybe they are the Pink Floyd of modern pop. I don’t care, they convinced me. and if I throw in Thom Yorke’s The Eraser here, also convinced me that laptops and loops have the potential to be as authentic as an acoustic guitar and a voice. Always, in this context, the voice.
HAIL TO THE THIEF

2003 Tan Fiero, Tan Fragil – Fernando Garcin & M
This record, more than any other, has been the soundtrack of my American decade, I don’t think it’s only down to it being the first breakthrough of Fernando Garcin. What impressed me the most (and I have written about this elsewhere at greater length) is that TFTF represents both a valid assimilation of American idiom into a Spanish folk-rock; and it has an exuberant strength and self confidence in Fernando’s lyrics and delivery. This is very much a joyous and sincere work, but it takes off in several places, and becomes itself, rather than a sum of its influences.
The compilation Tiempo y Detalles reprises some of this, but lacks the s paces of this almost perfect album.
TAN FIERO TAN FRÁGIL
TIEMPO Y DETALLES

2004 The Milk Eyed Mender – Joanna Newsom
not cute or grating as some have insisted, but the complex result of a young musician's process, standing at the crossroads of the old, weird America, and staking a small, sincere claim to be a part of that tradition.
THE MILK-EYED MENDER

2005 Demon Days – Gorillaz
From their first album, which I actually heard on the car radio, to the multi-media splash of this, I was most impressed by the melancholy alongside the brashness. I never knew who Blur were (still don’t) but this project brought a lot of delight, and its own voice, while still reaching millions. A curious sensation, but a music which reached me entirely on its own terms, and I can’t argue with that.
DEMON DAYS

2005 Come on Feel the Illinoise – Sufjan Stevens
I listened to this first via a recommendation from Green Gartside (of Scritti Politti) as an example of unalloyed optimistic music. It’s simple in intent and execution, and has some kind of tension between optimism, naivety and wistfulness… but also a series of gorgeous melodies, a pure pop dynamic which goes back to late Beach Boys or Paul Simon. Hardly fashionable, I would have suspected, but ultimately completely persuasive.
COME ON FEEL THE ILLINOISE

2006 White Bread, Black Beer – Scritti Politti
a collection of bedsit pop songs from a musician in the wilderness? Or a set of perfectly crafted quiet songs to cut against all the artifice Green had been guilty of ever since the early structuralist days. Self-aware, self-critical, but with a sense of melodic and harmonic invention that builds its own world. After immersing myself in this, I looked up Scritti Politti’s ‘lost album’ Anomie and Bonhomie, and deeply regret not having listened to that throughout the 1990s. A survivor, finally.
WHITE BREAD, BLACK BEER

2007 Comicopera – Robert Wyatt
Robert Wyatt’s ‘late output’ has in fact been stronger than his early output. From Dondestan and Shleep onward… I feel that Cuckooland and Comocopera are slightly less driven or compact, but if these had been RW’s only works, they’d still be in some kind of pantheon. So, Cuckooland… another CD which I have ‘virtually’ worn out the grooves of over the years… is still a joy, and Comicopera, as it drifts further away from rock and closer to Wyatt’s jazz roots is even better, less compliant. A critical nod from an old campaigner that all is not lost, hasta siempre, Commandante.
COMICOPERA

2010 Ragged Atlas – Cosa Brava
another ‘catch up’ saturation, driven by the Henry Cow boxed set, was to dig into the solo work of Fred Frith, of which I was almost entirely ignorant. Some 15 albums later, I latched onto this side project, and have actually seen them live in NYC. somehow the recording lacks the punch of the live band, though the delicacies come across better. Anyway, as a nod to this kind of deep folk, intelligent music, still rooted in the dance (from an abstract improviser??) this is the business.
RAGGED ATLAS

2011 Let England Shake – P J Harvey
step back, leap forwards. from the first sneak internet preview I realized this was one of those rare works which stamps its integrity and never diminishes. if there has been a masterpiece in the last decade (to vie with Rock Bottom and Horses, or Blood on the Tracks and After the Goldrush, or Trout Mask Replica and OK Computer… this is it). It bears all the characteristics of a personal peak – a totally surprising progression in her own evolution, yet made to seem completely inevitable. As good as Dry, but farther reaching.
LET ENGLAND SHAKE

& older music, but...
2009 40th Anniversary Box – Henry Cow
though this was all recorded in the 60s 70s and early 80s, it’s unavailability until recently, plus the near saturation coverage (heavy rotation) I have been giving it, means I have to include its 14 hours of music as the main soundtrack of the past 3 years. It’s also been a painful listen to me, as I think this is what I should have been doing for the last 30 years: playing music derived from this template. That I stepped back from this tradition is probably one of my biggest regrets. Still, just the Bremen and Hamburg CDs here have influenced my editing and writing as much as any film or author, so perhaps it’s just the same. Structure, composition, craft and emotion?

NO DEMANO GRAN COSA

The day all started. My rolling review of poems and music (1996)

This is a remembrance of the great poet from Catalunya Miquel Marti i Pol. I visited him in 1996 before my kind-of Rolling Thunder Review "La Ronda" (1996-1999). He was one of the poets who influenced me when I was a kid and I went to Roda de Ter, the village he was living, with my friend Maribel and her little daughter Scarlata (3 yrs old then) and my girlfriend Marian. We drove many miles from Valencia to meet him. When we got there we asked for his house. He and his wife were so kind and beautiful. He suffered for years a serious illness he couldn’t move. He had a great sense of humour and was fascinatined we four were there. I asked him permission for using one of his poems -"No Demano Gran Cosa"- during the first shows of La Ronda, and he said: "Do what you want to. Words fly". Then “La Ronda” started with a troupe of musicians playing all months in different places.
This audio is a recording ad libitum, not looking for any kind of perfection, it took me one morning with a kind of tired broken voice as I think it's the kind of delivery the poem deserves (I know this poem since 1978) and I only used my old tape recorder.

ADDENDUM:
FOR ENGLISH READERS

The biography of Miquel Martí i Pol (Roda de Ter, 1929 - Vic, 2003) has been marked by a number of defining features, amongst which the following are the most outstanding: a) his bond with his home town, where he has always lived; b) his condition as a worker and clerk at the La Blava textile factory in Roda de Ter where he was employed from the age of fourteen until he was forty-three; c) the consequences of the multiple sclerosis he contracted in about 1970, which has impeded normal movement and speech; d) his commitment to his social class and country; e) his willingness, since he was young, to question himself, to make an effort to know himself and the world around him. And, naturally, there is his work as a poet, which began to bear fruit in about 1948.
Since then, Miquel Martí i Pol's best biographical reference has been his work. He has not only written poetry. Even though he considers that he still has to try his hand at prose writing, he has published a volume of short stories Contes de la vila de R... i altres narracions (Stories from the Town of R? and Other Fiction - 1978), two volumes of memoirs and another of journalistic articles and a number of translations. He has written for several reviews, notable among which are Inquietud (1955-1966) and Reduccions (after 1977), of which he was a member of the editorial board.

From Existentialism to Historical Realism
With an education dominated by the prevailing Catholicism of the years that followed the Civil War, in a milieu perfectly described in El poble (The Town - 1966), the young Martí i Pol presents himself as questioning his being and destiny. He asserts his "I" as distinct from "you" (plural), which includes all other human beings but also focuses on the people around him, most of them workers, whose condition he admires, while also evincing his confusion ` which in poems like El fugitiu (The Fugitive) becomes distress -caused by his gradual process of getting to know (or his discovery of) his own personality. A crisis of religious values that occurred some time between 1952 and 1957 ended up by accentuating the intimate isolation in which the poet dwelled until the crisis was finally resolved through his opening up -let us say socially- to the reality of his surroundings. This was initially focussed within two immediate frameworks, his town and the factory where he worked, from whence were born the poems of El poble and the two collections La fàbrica (The Factory - 1959) and another work of the same title La fàbrica (1972).
With the poems of El poble and La fàbrica, Martí i Pol fully embraces the movement known as historical realism inasmuch as he translates into this framework a world -that of the people among whom he lives- which he knows very well as an insider, describing it by means of such realist procedures as the inventory or the chronicle. The workers who go to work every day, in the factory or climbing scaffolding, women who do the housework and retired people are his main characters in these poems, his "heroes" in that he elevates them to this status because he considers their work and their lives are, in fact, nothing less than an almost epic deed. The contrast between his descriptions of the life of a worker, which runs its course in very harsh conditions, and the human treatment, of great tenderness with which he refers to specific people, sometimes with their full names -"his people"- is one of the most original features of his poetry. In brief, Martí i Pol is committed to the people of his town and factory and, by extension, to the social class to which they belong, going so far as to put his voice and gesture -discourse and action- in their service. "I want to speak of them, in speaking of people today. / I want to speak of them. Without them, I do not exist." Evidently, poetry like this is expressed in direct and accessible language but, far from falling into the trap of pamphleteering, Martí i Pol manages to sustain the poetic value of his texts through painstaking choice of words and recurring simple metaphors and images that evoke situations and states of mind that permit the reader to feel familiar with the social context and to enter the personal worlds of the men and women that move within it.

From Withdrawal to a New Opening
The effects of the multiple sclerosis that Martí i Pol contracted in about 1970, are already visible from Vint-i-set poemes en tres temps (Twenty-seven Poems in Three Tempos - 1972) onwards. Until 1975, the object of his poetry was interiorised, but now solitude, anguish, and a certain presence of death prevail and the poet describes a diminished, closed world, the only one he sees as possible in the new circumstances with which he must cope. In this context, the senses take on a major role -sight and touch, in particular- since they are the instruments that enable him to fix the limits of his reality. The poems ofCinc esgrafiats a la mateixa paret (Five Graffiti on One Wall - 1975), which are loaded with imagery, synthesise in a masterly fashion the poet's changed world and the way he goes about confronting it, with an attitude that never falls into despair but rather always strives to cling to life with whatever limitations there may be, but still living.

In Quadern de vacances (Holiday Notebooks - 1976), Martí i Pol has already shown that he has overcome his previous state, and the books that follow manifest an evermore vibrant song to life that climaxes with volumes like Estimada Marta (1978) and L'àmbit de tots els àmbits (The Ambit of All Ambits - 1981). Now the poet is clearly looking to the future, with optimism, with a huge zest for life and renewed hope in man. He once again writes amorous and even erotically-nuanced poetry. And he invites the reader to engage in civic reflection on the need for everyone to give his or her best in constructing a country for everyone. There are three strands -faith in the future, eroticism, and civic reflection- that define this new key moment in Martí i Pol's work and that come to fruition in some of his most mature texts.
It is in this process of new opening that Martí i Pol starts to go deeper in his own reflections about poetry and his activity as a poet and this will continue and accentuate throughout the 1980s and 1990s. This reflection is to become the object of some of his poems, for example several in the section "Capfoguer" (Andiron) of Estimada Marta and some other more theoretical texts, like the article of 1987 "Algunes consideracions sobre experiència i poesia" (Some Considerations on Experience and Poetry), which was published in Reduccions, (Nº. 34). Poetry is understood as the poet's quest for inner knowledge, as self-analysis, which is thus linked to personal experience, although this experience can have many nuances. Martí i Pol understands that poetry tends to express what is essential in personal and collective life and to express it in simple terms. Again, the material with which the poet works, the word, is the object of priority attention: it cannot be used gratuitously but it is required to give density, precision and capacity for suggestion.

From Serenity to Bewilderment
In his period of full maturity, Martí i Pol's poetry exudes an undeniable sensation of serenity, which one finds in Primer llibre de Bloomsbury (First Bloomsbury Book - 1982) and is confirmed in Els bells camins(The Beautiful Paths - 1987). Not even the pain of the death of his first wife, which is expressed in Llibre d'absències (Book of Absences - 1985), breaks this mood. This is a serenity that consists of wisdom in living, in experience and in observation of the world that surrounds the poet, from a certain "autumnal" position and, in particular, wisdom that comes with a desire for knowledge that is especially applied to the poet's own "I". This process of experience, of observation and of knowledge, associated with a progressively heightened expression of the absolute value of love, is what enables the poet to keep growing, to keep maturing and to affirm himself with ever-greater plenitude.

However, in the books that Martí i Pol published in the 1990s - including texts written after 1986 that appear in the first of these works -his poetry takes a new turn characterised by bewilderment, disenchantment and insecurity. These are personal and even intimate sensations that are aggravated with the weight of the years. He recognises that he is growing old and one might also surmise that he has discovered new aspects of his own personality that were unknown to him, or at least hidden hitherto and these now impose themselves and disturb the relative placidity with which he had previously tended to confront himself. These upsetting sensations lead to many long silences, long periods of being unable to write, which are rare in the totality of his work. The feeling of bewilderment is not only personal. Both Un hivern plàcid (A Placid Winter - 1994) and Llibre de les solituds (1997) derive from his thoughts on the collective life of the country and the events of the social and political order of the day. And it is here that Martí i Pol's disenchantment becomes critical once again, revealing that he is a long way from giving in to resignation or passivity. In his final volume, Llibre de les solituds, Martí i Pol recovers the irony of some of his earlier books as a means of saving himself from bewilderment and resignation, thereby introducing an element that makes one think that he might have been emerging from this final stage.

JOHN CALE & JACK KEROUAC. THE MOON.

LA LUNA (The Moon)

(fragmento)

“(…)

Billy the Bud y Hanshan Emperador
Daniel Machree, mira Yeats

Observa la luna océano que mancha
El rostro -

En algunos casos
La luna eres tú

En cualquier caso
La luna”

ENGLISH:
"I run into Jack everywhere, mostly when I want to run away, which is always, except when I want everything to stay the way it is, which is also always—also the reason why I plan to run away.
For me, it’s a standing offer, a back up in a pick up loaded with pots of lavender to stick in the dry sod or mud or where ever lavender grows. I imagine he’d tell me to go. Who needs a car when you’ve got a thumb or a bar full of dim moons orbiting gins, stirring lies with the good aim of wet lips. I imagine he’d say, but why go? Why not exercise your right to stay in this seat and meet yourself over and over again by telling every stranger a different story, pouring in a little less truth every time until you’ve packed up every easel and folded it flat and that’s your life, a stack not of what you’ve painted, but the tunnel made from the places you crawled out.
I imagine he’d laugh at my pastel dream, call it a bullshit dharma, setting a doormat at the stoop of nirvana, asking for a wheel but choosing hubcap. So, today, Jack, on your ninetieth birthday, I’m going to sit in your lap with a beer next to a stranger, my white and dying cat who has leaned his skeleton next to my body, and tell him about the time he was a full moon."

THE MALOA WARRIORS. Guardianes de Flobania. The great musical experimental project

MALOA WARRIORS is the most interesting experimental project I have known these last years, and I feel so proud to have been part of it adding some voice and words to some of their creations.

LISTEN TO MALOA WARRIORS SONGS HERE
Derek Damico, aka ‘da boi derinho’, is the alma mater of this project and his inspirations is endless (he is also the creator of The Magneto Flobe and he aso has a solo page as "derinho"). I know few people that can have so open-minded background of music, from Captain Beefheart and Orbital to Burt Bacharach, from Ornette Coleman to The Beatles, from Brazilian music to Afro-American and European music. If you might think of a genre to define what he and his Maloa Warriors Arkestra make, you’ll have to say: “Music”.
In their own words: ‘The Maloa Warriors are the guardians of Flobania... they are very bellicose people... when they are not steadfastly protecting Flobe-kind, like when they’re on the break, they record Flobe style music... only wilder, and more experimental and stuff... sit back crack open a cool bud and pop a beer and let your mind wander...’.
Yes. Those fellows, Jack Kerouac, Dylan Thomas, Ornette, Brian and John would be proud of them. As far as I’m concerned they are a crazy bunch of naughty great musicians at their best, and Derek, the master of all this magic project, make all possible, putting together great music and rhythms and the best collaborations from amazing musicians to make the poetry dance. Yes. This is poetry dancing. This is for your all today and tomorrow parties. No doubt. Listen world, listen Florida, listen Spain. Just dance and wander...

JARED/HILRANT: OBSCURE TO REALITY. Tongue & Groove Records

OBSCURE TO REALITY
by Jared / Hilrant

(Tongue & Groove Records)
JARED HILRANT OBSCURE TO REALITY

(ENGLISH)
This is one my favorite records of 2015. Paul Tilley (Hilrant, Wales) and Jared Estes (Shelton, WA) recording songs of folk, rock, experimental, all genres are welcome in this astonishing work.
See review in Spanish.
I'd like now to say I wouldn't like to use too many of those adjectives used by conventional media and critics. Sometimes they use more adjectives than nouns, more tags than one simple invitation to hear what music is.
So... this is like a poem...just words flying...

Psychedelic ears
under a cap of avant-garde mind
and oh see how the sounds fly from Wales to Seattle
from Dylanthomasland to Vietnam
Oh see the sea the ocean
Heaven angeled from hell to glory
as the lonesome hobo is wandering again
thru confussion and delight
a hole in pocket
a pocket of one milliard stars becoming new black holes
The Price of loving you is scars, rags of scarfs, skat of howling cats
oh dear cats yawning so nothing to do
Heretic & Witch you sent your naughty postcards from Doomtown to us
Crash and Burn do it and keep on doin' keep on rockin'
after the fire flood thing
Open your mind open frontiers
no boderlines are needed let the refugees go wherever they want to
The world is our hometown
Life is not forget not conform
Get inspired
like these fellows from obscure to reality do
Brothers and sisters
Listen listen flow!

MÚSICA, VOZ, PALABRA/MUSIC, VOICE, WORDS (Más de 20 mundos)

ENGLISH:
Fernando Garcin works since 1990 combining his literary career -books, poetry, short stories, translations, lyrics- and his songwriting and spoken word and singer career in which the most important thing is the voice and vocal delivery and to look for the best music to go with his lyrics and voice. He likes to call his songs as talk-walk songs or just songs in progress. He can speak, sing and mix both styles, and he has been working hard to find his own style, words are so important you have to use the best phrasing for every matter or subject, and the voice has to be understood perfectly and appreciate in all its range and intentions.
Reading his works with music since 1989, he has been doin' gigs with his own songs and musicians in Spain and other countries since 1996 until now. As a journalist from “El País” wrote some years ago, “he is a pioneer in his genre, a genre that hadn't been carried out in Spain, and he has found the best hour”. You only could find some sporadic cases withouth continuity, and some one-off meetings of poets reading his words with background music.
He is very open-minded about music and he also loves perfomances, video, images and mise-en-scène. He likes spontainety, freshness, even demo sounds.
His works in music are: "Breve Idilio" (1988-1992), "La Mejor Hora (1997-1999), Vash Gon (2000), "Tan Fiero Tan Frágil (2003), "Tiempo y Detalles" (2006), y "Amor sin Título/ Untitled Love" (2011). He is now working -with JJ Llombart, Panta Rei and some open-minded musicians he is looking for- on new songs for a special work, a new collection of songs to celebrate his 20 years since his first solo recording, and his 25 years as songwriter and, at the same time, 25 years since his first book was published, when he won the Critics Circle Award. He also is making collaborations with musicians like Derek Damico & Maloa Warriors (USA), Jose Moya (SP), Andrew Austin (UK), Art Lip (DE), Mia Lotus (CA)... He has to confess it's not easy to find around his town some kind of musician for some special specific songs he has been writing lately, so they might understand how these songs has been conceived and the way he would like to record them.
Nothing has been done. Everything is happening now and ever, and what's happening is not yours or mine, but something made by all and every one. He looks for a certain balance between alternative and experimental sounds and sort of lyrical pop-folk-rock sound. He doesn't try to be rigid or square, and he loves to add tenderness to the wild side. Joy is beyond perfection, and nothin can be better than catching the moment before it fades away. It's just like the second rain. The second raind that falls from trees and buildings after the rain. This is his storytelling purpose. That's why at the time they tributed him for his 20 years of poetry in 2006, he wrote and published the poem "La Segunda Lluvia" (The Second Rain) in Spain and USA.
His ears and eyes are open to the sounds of the street, the country, life and death and joy and suffering, he's been listening all these years to Lou Reed, Pau Riba, Captain Beefheart, Jacques Brel, The Clash, Patti Smith, african, turkish and balcanic roots music, electro music, reggae and reggae dub & rap, Sisa, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Daevid Allen, Radiohead, Leo Ferré, Nick Cave, T. Rex, progressive sounds, the white album, Dioptría, Catedral, Veneno, John Cale, Joe Henry, Neil Young, punk, post-punk and new wave music, Rooz Williams, PIL, PJ Harvey, Ornette, Monk... and all the unknown creative people far from the mainstrean and radio and media manipulation, close to the hungry divine crazy creators of wonderful moments of sounds and silence. He really loves to think older people and the very young ones are the best listeners and readers now, though people from different generations may have curiosity and an open mind too..
“A friend she asked me some years ago '¿Why does beauty hurt? It all begins here. Uncertainty rules the sounds and words that fly. We feel we are close to bliss when we cannot control everything, and we keep on moving, skidding, looking for a warm harbour for all the boats adrift.” (Fernando Garcin, 2011)
He has a good number of listener and followers through internet, as you can confirm checking out his pages on Reverbnation (after Myspace) and Facebook.

BALUJA & SMALL : "TIGHT CONNECTION"

Empezó a componer en 1979, y ha publicado 15 discos, entre ellos “Modern Man”, “The Beauty Of It All", "Within Love's Walls, “The System•” “Nowhere To Land” y el gran “Bus of Broken Dreams”.

('Tight Connection', Baluja & Small)
('Nowhere To Land'. Baluja & Small)

TOM HEDRICK: THE MAN IN THE BROWN SUIT

Entre su discografía extensa y variada, cuya última novedad es el gran "Night Light" (2014), se encuentran "As If" (2002), Red Giant (2009), "2 Laws in One Day" (2011), "Paus For Cheese" (2012) y "The Man In The Brown Suit" (2013) que ahora tengo el placer de reseñar aquí.

"The Man In The Brown Suit is the seventh solo release from Minneapolis-based power popper Tom Hedrick. Known for his joyful and downright toe-tapping guitar rock songs, Tom brings the catchy choruses and driving rhythms to full throttle on this fine record.

Right from the mersey-beat opening of "Shock Of My Life", surprises and delights are to be found everywhere within this 14-song collection. Listen to the gorgeous, moody sweep of "Coffee And Cake" with its delicate horns and strings. Marvel in the avant-pop spectacle of "What Kind Of Man", complete with the backing rhythm of an actual metal stamping machine! Take in the jangling, cascading guitar gems "November" and "Mister B".

There's country-stylings to be found on the pleasing "Snowed In", and a magnificent mash up of piano balladry and 1970's progressive rock on the ambitious "Pencil". Be sure to check out the jazz and blues masterstroke of the album's closer, "Dear Faye", where the guitars and bass duel to the very last bar" (Cd Baby Review).

JARED ESTES

Jared Estes is a singer songwriter living and working in Olympia, Washington (USA). He has been working on his project Insomnia Cafe, series of folk& indie rock songs CDs, which are like his own free republic of mind sounds. Listening to his CDs you can feel an enthusiastic and talented musician whose set of songs are a works in progress, always looking for new sounds and performances and, at the same time, diggin' all his influences, all the americana roots he is interested in revealing as timeless.
JARED ESTES INFO
His own songs are raw, intense, heartfelt recordings showing all his range and talent. You will hear simple (not that simple) folk songs, in which he shows all his wisdom as storyteller. “Dream Lover” is a terrific performance, so well played and sung, with a spooky wonderful delivery. This one, like the astonishing “A Psalm”, are two great songs offering the best of a singer carrying on a folk, alt folk song, to its limits and beyond.

He has some grunge/punk attitude I really love. And his fantastic psychedelic side as well, I think he can offer some experimental psychedelic surprises through his new projects mixing his knowledge of roots and these new sounds.

Yes, you might think of what Roscoe Holcomb would do nowadays meeting Jerry Garcia or Lee Ranaldo, and then you listen to the excellent “Dark Matter” and you can't get enough. His guitar sounds great, playing acoustic, and playing electric, and his voice goes from tenderness to loud epic tough mood makin' thru what I think is the most hard thing to do: to get the sounds of today experimenting since the long traditional & old music he knows so well.

“The Harley Song” takes you to the best of 70s rock music, Neil Young around, and “The Seeds of Change” is one of his most daring adventurous songs, when a singer performance makes you feel he is just in a room sharing with you his deepest thoughts and feelings. His woks are restless, his search of (out) folk and rock sounds is essential, and essence is this rare priceless elixir a great singer and songwriter can give us and we can’t live without it.
